Parents and Siblings

Chris Rock was born in Andrews, South Carolina. His parents moved to the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, shortly after his birth. They relocated and settled in the working-class area of Bedford–Stuyvesant a few years later.  Rosalie, his mother, was a social worker and teacher for the mentally disabled and his dad, Julius Rock, was a truck driver as well as a newspaper deliveryman. Julius passed away in 1988 following an operation for an ulcer.

Rock is the oldest of the seven children of his parents (six boys and a girl). He also had a paternal half-brother who was older, Charles Ledell Rock, who passed away in 2006, following alcoholism. His younger brothers Tony, Kenny, and Jordan are also involved in the entertainment industry.

Rock’s family history was featured on the PBS program African American Lives 2 in 2008. A DNA test revealed that he’s of Cameroonian descent, specifically the Udeme people from northern Cameroon.

Before serving in the American Civil War as part of the United States Colored Troops, Rock’s great-great-grandfather, Julius Caesar Tingman, was enslaved for 21 years. In the 1940s, the Rock’s paternal grandparents relocated from South Carolina to New York City in order to become a taxicab driver and a preacher.

Rock got married to Malaak Compton-Rock on November 23 in 1996. Compton-Rock is the founder and executive director of StyleWorks, an organization that is non-profit and a hair salon with full-service that offers free services to women who have left welfare and started working. The couple resided in Alpine, New Jersey, with their two daughters.

Rock filed divorced from the Compton-Rock in December 2014. Rock admitted to having committed infidelity within the marriage and also battling with a pornography addiction. Rock is known as “a committed cannabis user.” On the 18th of September 2020, Rock declared that he has a learning disorder, which is a neurological disorder that causes it to be difficult for him to recognize non-verbal social signals.

The comedian posted via Twitter on the 19th of September 2021 that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19. The comedian strongly urged vaccination to his followers.
